6 Points to Check During a Test Drive

At BMW of Freeport we know that people in the New York City area often feel overwhelmed when car shopping. Our professional staff strives to make the whole purchase process as enjoyable as possible. One thing that helps with car shopping is to keep six important points in mind every time you take a car for a test drive. By checking out the following items, you better ensure that the vehicle you ultimately purchase genuinely will suit you not only in the immediate future, but for as long as you want to own it.

1. Check out the Interior Comfort. Before you even drive away in car, take some time and make sure the interior space is comfortable for you. Get into and out of the car several times so you can check if it’s difficult to do that simple task. Adjust everything from the mirrors to seat and sit for a moment while evaluating just how comfortable the setup is. Remember that you will spend significant amounts of time in the vehicle for years to come.
2. Look at the Trunk Carefully. Most people don’t bother to do this, but remember that you’ll be putting things in the trunk. Is it big enough to fit your golf clubs, luggage, grocery bags or whatever else you take along on a regular basis? Is the opening wide and low enough to make loading bigger items easier? Do the seats fold down, and how much additional space does that provide?
3. Drive the Car Thoroughly. You can’t tell if you like how a vehicle handles after being behind the wheel for five minutes. You need to spend about half an hour on different roads, from surface streets to the freeway, getting a feel for everything. Park the car at a shopping center and see how easy it is to back out a spot while looking for traffic. Make a U-turn on a residential street and see how tightly it handles. Don’t let anyone rush you through the test drive, because it’s your time to figure out if the car will work for you.
4. Test out All the Features. Does the car have seat heaters? Turn them on. Does it have an infotainment system? Play with it. Check out all of the bells and whistles on the vehicle. You’re not just seeing if the different items work, but how they work. A surprising number of car shoppers make a purchase, only to find out a few days later they don’t know how to take advantage of all of the features available.
5. Drive the Car at Night. It might seem like a silly idea, but taking a car you’re considering for a spin at night can help you make a final decision. Some vehicles have dash lights that you’ll hate. Some have headlights that illuminate everything ahead so clearly you are filled with confidence. Remember that once you own it, you’ll drive the vehicle after the sun goes down.
6. Look Everything Over Carefully. You need to be critical and pick out anything that might bother you later. Does the vehicle not have some features you need? Does it have a spare tire? Are there fog lights? If there’s anything you don’t like, decide if it’s big enough of a deal to break the deal, or if you can really live without it. After all, you don’t want to spend big money on something you’re not satisfied with.
